Robert Lia started his training as an apprentice at a very young age under the supervision of the late Philip Farrugia from Żebbuġ, with whom he worked for just over 10 years. During his apprenticeship, Robert mastered the authentic techniques of traditional Maltese stone masonry and molding architectural features and structures, as well as the renovation and restoration of buildings. He then started working freelance in 1998, using his experience as a stonemason and contractor on several building and restoration projects. In 2010 he set up RGI Ltd. During this time, he learnt the value of working within an interdisciplinary team together with academic professionals who are themselves experts within the field of conservation and restoration. Working with such specialized teams takes advantage of expert knowledge, experience, and all the latest knowhow in this specific and delicate area. In 2012, Robert took over a company that manufactures traditional handmade Maltese patterned tiles using the age-old techniques, molds, and designs. The former owner, Joe Camilleri, also trained Robert on how to manufacture the old pattern tiles. Robert began to restore the old molds and research to advance in the old techniques using prime material. In 2017, he set up MaltaTiles Ltd and started teaching two employees. The company has since grown to three employees, having engaged a helper who is also training to become a tile maker too.
