Carmel Azzopardi is a creative artist who also worked as a technical educator, marine engineer, and electrical quality controller. He joined the Malta Drydocks as an apprentice in 1968, from where he built up his technical knowledge and his electrical engineering profession in the maritime sector. Carmel continued research activities in engineering, attended numerous academic courses, and gained practical experience at various marine companies and foreign technical institutions. He also worked at the Faculty of Engineering within the University of Malta, where besides continuing his research he also set up a Mobility Friendly Laboratory, and assisted various undergraduate and postgraduate students in the course of their studies and projects. Through his interest in creative art he also organised various courses in stained glass, which he believes improves the environment, especially our concrete surroundings. After his retirement, Carmel dedicated more time to work within the community, including students and senior citizens, with whom he seeks to share his technical knowledge and experience of materials and energy properties to create colourful artwork.
